What I learned when I cut 18,000 words
Some of you may have noticed that I finally got up the nerve to upload my email list to Substack yesterday.
A new essay is now live there.
It grew out of a quiet morning—blueberries, irises, and the strange way endings sometimes turn and turn again until they turn into something else entirely.
If you’d like to read it—and especially if you’re a writer I don’t yet have an email for—you can find it here:
I’m grateful for those of you who still follow along here, even as the writing continues to find its home in new places. I’m still settling in, but it’s been made lighter by discovering some of you already there in the neighborhood. Thank you for the quiet house-warming gifts. 🤍
I thought I was revising a novel.
It turns out God was revising me.
“I thought I was revising a novel.
It turns out God was revising me.”
Love it! I’ve been there, but I never put it in those words. Congratulations, Deb.
Aww, thank you, Annie. ❤️
Lovely to read your posts on substack. I’m not planning to join so it looks like I can’t comment there but please know I am reading your posts 🙏💟
Morag, thank you so much for your thoughtful note. It was a hard (and a bit lonely) transition for me, but when my media storage here almost hit its limit, the timing was right. Who knew? I’ve loaded in photos like there’s no tomorrow. It sure is harder to delete than it is to add. Seeing your name always makes my day. I’ll be keeping one foot in and one foot out. 😃 I have too many wonderful friendships here that have developed over many years. I’ll be traveling back and forth to read… kind of like us living on other sides of the world… 🫂🌸🫖🌻🤍
🤗🤗💝 I know what you mean about the storage 👍👍 God bless you ❣️
You, too, Morag!
Deb, enjoyed your link and the beautiful photos of all the poetically descriptions of irises. God does lead us in new directions. I am not on Substack but appreciate your storage getting full and moving into new spaces. All that editing must have caused you to eliminate more than words in your life. Appreciate you and your writing. Congratulations on your new novel and God’s new revision of you!
💕 Hazel
